If Easter 2020 was about the Tree of Good Wishes generating a feeling of community spirit in the village at a difficult time, Easter 2021 was about intergenerational activity and lots of smiles and conversations as Easter eggs and cards were shared around the village.
Over the Easter period 46 Easter eggs were delivered to children living in the village – funded by the proceeds from the Foragers’ Market and Winter’s Eve.
Activity packs were offered to the children to make an Easter greeting card for a neighbour.
The response to the card making was amazing and 21 cards were hand-made and delivered to the more senior members of the village – here is a lovely quote from one young family: “Our kids are very happy to participate in activities that benefit the more senior members of the village, those who made the St Hilary what it was before we lived here.”
A recipient of a card emailed: “It was lovely to see and meet the children – I have seen them walking around the village but never really knew who they were until now.”
Another recipient said: “I was thrilled to receive the card. I was touched and it made me feel quite emotional.”
A massive thank you to all the children who took up the challenge to make and deliver an Easter card – it was a kind and thoughtful gesture that, as can be seen from the quotes, was very much appreciated by the recipients of your good wishes. And, what a great way to meet your neighbours! Thank you also to all the mums and dads too, who sent some lovely photos of the card deliveries. What stars you all are!
A reminder that Bruce and Lynne Rankine continue to receive donations of groceries for the Dusty Forge foodbank.
And, in addition to the usual grocery items they would be pleased to receive donations of Easter Eggs and food for dogs and cats which they are struggling to supply.
Donations can be left in a box in their carport at Hendre - second house on the left after the telephone box.
During a recent Church Zoom Service, Caroline from Dusty Forge said they were very grateful for all the donations which are making a huge difference to the people in Ely. A big thank you for your generous support.
We have received a response to the three questions we posed in our 29 January letter to the Vale Council about lorries in the village.
In addition to releasing photos of the filming when the programme has aired, and the promise of a tour around the Tardis film set in Cardiff when we are allowed out, the BBC has made a donation of £1,500 to the village.
The £1,500 donation has been paid into the St Hilary Forum bank account.
This is a village wide donation and The Forum is just the mechanism by which payment is made, so there will a two stage process for deciding how to use the donation:
- The first phase will be drawing up a long list of ideas – the deadline for submitting ideas will be 28 February
- The second phase will be considering the ideas and deciding which one(s) to take forward
It might seem complicated, but we want to ensure that everyone has the chance to participate, especially when we are not allowed to meet in person.
The walks and strolls section of the website includes:
- The 10 core circular walks from St Hilary ranging from gentle strolls (1 to 2 miles) to monster expeditions (over 10 miles)
- 4 different routes to Cowbridge, which can be combined for circular routes
- Strolling over The Clump for a takeaway coffee at Stalling Café or round the Garn or to Beaupre Castle

Another enormous lorry stuck in the village - part 3
In the last twelve months, the village has experienced damage to property from articulated lorries using the lane through the village as a route to St Athan.
